Last week I was asked if you can add homemade rock wool Panels to block an alcove and get equal wall distances as a result of the “Do’s and Don’ts of audiophile room setup” video. Well we’re asking a lot of these panels in such a scenario. So we have a box filled with building insulation (rock wool). So we have a sound absorption technology and then we need to place those panels in certain areas of the room. Well we have to get back to usage. What are we trying to create here? How are we defining our sound stage? How are we defining what kind of image and music we want out of this room?
So just putting panels up and not asking these questions, I don’t think it’s the best approach. I think you need to define what you’re using the room for and treat the room accordingly to achieve an acoustical objective that you want from your room. I don’t care if it’s a control room. I don’t care if it’s a home theater room. I don’t care if it’s a vocal room. I don’t care if it’s a live room. All those rooms have an acoustical objective in your mind, you know the sound you want out of them. So you use absorption and diffusion in the right amounts in the right places to get that sound you want. Now you don’t know what sound you want, well then you’re kind of in trouble. You got to tell me what you want.
In this situation I guess this guy’s an audiophile with a two-channel system setup. Well then we need to look at the panels. We need to see what their absorption rates and levels are. Where those absorption rates and levels work best in the room. Just putting them anywhere that they have room or anywhere you think they should go. No, every piece of acoustical treatment in your room has purpose and function and it has a position. Purpose, function and position and you have to get those three variables right and because you have some sound absorbing panels lying around and they’re in the garage maybe they need to stay there.
I don’t know, we’d have to look at your room, we’d have to look at the panel, we have to look at the room usage, what sound do you want and then I can tell you where you can put these panels.
In Summary
So I hope that helps you. If you would like your room acoustic issues analysed for free by me then please fill in the form here and I will be happy to take a look for you.
Thanks and speak soon

If you know the frequency and amplitude of the reflection, you have a better chance of identifying sources.
Can the quality of a sound reflection identify the reflection source?
