Local atmospheric conditions and human-caused pollution sometimes combine to form obviously terrible breathing conditions that send people to the hospital. Less obvious conditions which include high levels of fine particulate matter can also cause deaths. The study discussed in the following article includes a map based on atmospheric modeling which estimates the deaths per thousand kilometers due to particulate increase relative to 1850 levels. Some areas have even seen a drop in particulate matter in the given time frame.
