Hi there,
I’m new around here. Have been following your videos and reading a lot in the past few days.
I’m going to be building a live room for recording later this year. Dimensions would be 23’x17’x9′.
I’ll be recording acoustic drums, guitars, electric guitar cab (2×12″), bass cab (1×12″), various percussion, cello, etc. Medium volume levels. It’s going to be a finished basement, regular drywall materials (can’t change that at this point unfortunately).
My main concern is the drums. Would you say I should go with something like a 4’x4’x4″ ofi48 cloud a couple of inches off the ceiling or should I look into a diffuser ? Would 9′ be tall enough?
Any other suggestions would be really appreciated! I was thinking adding good corner bass traps, as well as various kinds of diffusers to the room. Not decided on anything specific right now.
Thanks very much!
D, A ceiling height of 14′ is required for a drum room. Your 23′ and 17′ distances are good. You will need absorption and diffusion technology that is mobile for positioning around different instruments. Forget about corner “bass traps” The corners are the least of your issues.
Thanks Dennis! That’s what I’ve been doing in the past in a similar space. Good to know I’m on the right track :)
For a 9′ ceiling what would you say would be the optimal height for a QRD diffuser ? In a room like mine.
