I have mounted hundreds of pieces of 18″ x 25″ X 2″ Acoustic Pro foam in various sized frames built from 1″ x 3″ select pine. Normally I build these frames by nailing together with #4 finishing nails and glue for securing the ends. This provides very strong frames. Recently, I switched to using #8 x 1 1/2″ SPAX screws in place of nails and glue for building the frames. Surprisingly these screws do not require pilot holes and do not split the wood. The SPAX screws seem to provide a stronger frame. Has anyone tried using SPAX screws for building frames?
