Check out this guest post from audiogeekzine.com for my daily audiophile blog roundup about a lot of things that go into making a great musical recording, and three in particular stand out. A basic step, but one that is often overlooked is the need to tune each instrument. It’s incredibly important that every instrument, strings to percussion, be properly tuned, else the recording will suffer for it. Another important step is making sure the recording mics are in the right location. A recording may sound fine one way, but if you never take the time to try it with the mic in a different location, you may miss out on an excellent recording. Finally, musical integrity. People want to hear what made them fall in love with a given style of music. They need to see that same expression carried over from record to record. Everything else can be perfect, but if the musician isn’t true to the music, the recording takes the hit.
